27 Nov 2015 - How To Get A Designer Look In Your Home

Anyone would love to make their homes look like the interior was designed by a professional, but not all of us can afford an interior designer and even when we can, not all of them give you the exact look that you want.  Doing things yourself almost always work out cheaper, so why not choose your own color scheme and furniture and get the same look?  No one really likes doing this because they feel that it will never look as well as a designer’s work, or they feel that they have no idea what they are doing.  Very few people know that designers have one simple guideline that will make any room look like magic, and you, too, can apply this simple guideline when you are redesigning a room, and it will look amazing.

How To Get A Designer Look In Your Home

The rule, or guideline that the interior designers use is called the 60-30-10 rule.  This rule is a very basic one, but it will help you get the look that you have always dreamed of.  Even web designers sometimes use this rule to get websites looking professional and beautiful.

The 60 is the primary, or dominant color.  The 30 is the secondary color and the 10 is the accent color.  This means that your design must include 60% of the dominant color, 30% of the secondary color and 10% of the accent color.  The problem is that almost everyone struggles in getting a good color scheme, but there are many tools on the internet and apps for smartphones that can assist you in getting a great color scheme.  These usually include a color wheel and a few selectors, some with fixed space between them, meaning that you move one selector and the rest moves as well, resulting in beautiful color schemes.

To explain better, the dominant color (60%) will most likely look best on walls, if you are repainting as well.  The secondary color (30%) should be the color of the furniture and the accent color (10%) should be the color of the accents used in your decor.  If you are not repainting and the wall is white, you could use the dominant color for your furniture, or for your flooring, as long as the color combination stays in proportion.

Always keep in mind that less is more and this is key.  One of the biggest reasons why people never get the look that they want is all of the clutter in their houses.  When an interior designer is finished with a room, you will not see clutter, which is why it looks amazing.  Add a little clutter to the room and you will see how much worse it looks.
