When it comes to home maintenance, it’s quite easy to feel a little lost, since there are so many things that need to be done.

Home Maintenance Guide

Making a checklist of all of the things that need to be done, and when they need to be done, will make things much easier for you and it will ensure that things don’t go unchecked, and when things go unchecked, you can be sure that they will have more damage and may need replacing rather than maintenance, which will end up costing you much more in the end.  Here is a list that you may find helpful.  Keep in mind that you may need to edit it to suit you, since you will most probably have different things in your home.

Monthly:

Fire extinguishers need to be checked so that you can be sure that they will work when you need them most.  You should ensure that the gauge shows good pressure, the extinguishers are easily accessible and that they have no visible damage.

Air conditioners have filters that need to be replaced regularly, so check these filters and replace them if needed.

If you have a kitchen sink disposal, cleaning it once a month will ensure that it doesn’t get clogged and that it doesn’t get nasty, so clean the sink disposal once a month.

 Quarterly:

Smoke detectors are very important because they warn you before your whole house catches on fire.  You should test your smoke detectors once every quarter to be sure that your smoke detectors work.  Smoke detectors should have test buttons that you can use to test them.

If there are unused sinks or toilets in your house, be sure to run the water every four months in order to ensure that the water that is in them does not become stagnant, and to prevent any grime and dirt buildup.

You should also test your garage door auto reverse feature, even if you do not have any children.  Put a piece of wood down where the garage door is and make it close.  If it opens up again when it hits the piece of wood, your garage is fine.

Biannually:

Your refrigerator takes a lot of power, and helping it run as efficiently as possible is very important, so you should vacuum the coils of your refrigerator every six months, since the coils become dirty and loaded with dust over time.  Cleaning them will help your refrigerator run more efficiently and thus help you save power.

Even though you check your smoke detectors every 4 months, it’s important to change the batteries of the smoke detectors every six months to ensure that they do not run dead.

Lastly, you should give your house a deep clean.  The best way to do this is to pretend that you are moving.  Take everything out of one room, clean the whole room and all of the items before putting them back.
